Proving that one new trophy per evening is not always enough, our team not only toppled Heroic Shannox for the first time tonight but then proceeded to do likewise to Heroic Baleroc as well. It’s all about shard-management baby!

The evening’s final success occurred as the team presented itself before Baleroc for the first time. After one or two rather promising initial attempts, our mostly ZAT approach (we’re sure a couple of the guys peeked – naughty naughty – we know who you are!) yet another FBK was earned in the very loosest sense of the word. “Because, you know, we showed up, right?!”

The guarded explanation is that Cataclysm’s final major raid content is imminently being readied for release and this content difficulty nerf is merely a means to ensure the majority of the player-base can see and overcome it before new content renders it irrelevant.

The reality is, three of the bosses that were killed with ease tonight had “no right to be so easy” and as a result, fell without offering any sense of achievement or accomplishment. This is one area that Blizzard does not excel at. Applaud them we should for helping all players see all content – but the manner in which they do so is clumsy and awkward.

One wonders if WoW’s design team saw Dara O’Briain’s comments on why games are the most demanding form of popular entertainment right now and decided to do something about it. O’Briain postulated that ‘books don’t ask you what the major themes are at the end of chapter three and require the correct answers before allowing you to read chapter four!’

The Firelands raid-zone has not been an inspiring success so far. Few of the team admire the design or the environment and were it not the required stepping stone for gear and progression, it would see a lot less attention than it does.

In fact, so much of Cataclysm’s raiding content has been a rehash of times past, that the very act both irritates now and spoils the memory of what was done before. Seeing Blizzard ressurrect Onyxia “just one more time” is getting to be about as cliched as seeing Star Trek or Doctor Who (to name but two sci-fi totems) face off against some new realisation of Nazi Germany.

The reappearance of so many old foes might well lend a curious NPC to suggest that our past claims to vanquishing glory were somewhat dishonest. It cannot be denied that there’s been rather too many encounters against the former occupants of Molten Core and the Lairs Blackwing and Onyxia both.

Certainly we’re all anticipating the showdown with Deathwing come the final chapter of this installment of WoW’s story but on current form, Blizzard have a some significant improving to do if they’re going to match the quality of their best work from WoW’s past.
