Proving that one new trophy per evening is not always enough, our team not only toppled Heroic Shannox for the first time tonight but then proceeded to do likewise to Heroic Baleroc as well. It’s all about shard-management baby!

FBK - Firelands - Shannox - 10hc

On a quiet April night, the mood is restless and the usual pleasures simply won’t suffice. “What to do?” muses the raid leader. Then inspiration hits – nip into Firelands for a change and give the old bosses a fresh lease of life by visiting their heroic modes. We’ve not done that before and where better to start than with the master of trash, the collector of mobs. Shannox heroic needs a little extra DPS and some clever mutt-management but it comes together without too many tears. Our Firelands heroic account is opened and though we may not be rushing to make additional deposits to this particular account, there’ll always be a rainy day and there’ll (almost) always be a record of tonight’s kill here on the site for us to get all misty eyed over.

New Year, New News!

Last Updated on Saturday, 21 January 2012 11:49 Written by HalonaZAT Saturday, 21 January 2012 12:00

“Welcome Back and Hello 2012!”

The new year 2012 has begun and Halona is raiding once again after our annual festive break. Top card on the menu remains the challenges of the Dragon Soul raid and we’re certainly pushing forwards to try and achieve more “FBKs” with the few encounters that remain.

The All-New LFR Tool

The All-New LFR Tool

“Until we do ZAT again!”

In other areas, the guild is evolving again. With the establishment of the “Looking for Raid” tool in-game, the ability to keep each encounter a secret puzzle that we only solve together has become much much harder and in order not to deny our members the benefits of using ‘LFR’ freely, we have been conducting our raids in a more conventional manner lately rather than strictly adhering to our ZAT mission. We still love ZAT immensely and plan to keep it a part of who we are but for now, standard raiding is likely to be the modus operandi for the remainder of Dragon Soul.

“Welcome to the Social!”

For the first time in living memory, Halona has made some internal changes to create a new guild rank named “Social Star” for those players wishing to join us on a purely social basis. We hope it’ll be a good way to keep in touch with our retired team members when they reach the end of their active raiding days as well as make a bunch of new friends who enjoy the other 75% of WoW that isn’t all about the 10-man progression efforts.

Players interested in joining us on a social basis need simply approach one of our many friendly officers (preferably while they’re not raiding!) for a quick chat and an invite, assuming you don’t come across as a psycho mentalist, a cushion fetishist, a nazi apologist or a fraudulent astrologist! After all, you ‘gotta’ have standards, right?!

Star Wars: The Old Republic from Bioware

Star Wars: The Old Republic from Bioware

“Hardcore, do you want TOR?”

Have you managed to try the new Star Wars MMO from Bioware yet? “Star Wars: The Old Republic” to give it its full title (aka: TOR or SWTOR for short) was released just before Christmas and has been proving to be something of a delight for those who have previously enjoyed Bioware’s earlier RPGs in the Mass Effect and Dragon Age lines.

A number of us have been enjoying SWTOR immensely over the Christmas and New Year period and we’ve finally got around to creating our own Halona guild within the game. You’ll find it on the Sith’ari server on the ‘Republic’ side of the factional divide. Get in contact if you fancy joining us over there by whispering any of the following: Broliant, Hetty, Lkjp, Olivia or Vardo. If you’ve access to our Mumble server, you’ll find us hiding in the new SWTOR channel “I’m in a cutscene, baby!” whilst playing.

Diablo III - Coming Soon?

Diablo III - Coming Soon?

“Hablo El-Diablo?!”

Reportedly, Blizzard’s forthcoming Diablo III is due to be released in early February 2012. (Alternatively: “When it’s ready!”) Some of us know the series’ previous chapters whilst others of us will be coming to the game with the fresh eyes of those who’ve since learned what fine games good Blizzard doth make.

It’s highly likely that we’ll find ourselves greatly stretched when the moment arrives and we have to start choosing how to spend our time. WoW, SWTOR, DIII… then of course there’s Mass Effect 3 not much further away, promising to conclude the galaxy spanning trilogy of Commander Shepherd. And Guild Wars 2. And MoP… Is it all getting to be just a little bit too much?!

First Kill of Majordomo Staghelm (10n)!

If “Wednesday’s child is full of woe” (Monday’s Child – Wikipedia) then by the same maxim, “Thursday’s child has far to go”. Thankfully, our first appointment of the evening today was against Majordomo Staghelm and to reach him, we found a new portal waiting for us, saving us an exhausting intra-zone hike.

Our group rushed in to learn and observe by our “ZAT but for those cheatin’ peekin’ souls that had clearly looked ahead or were running DBM type tools” approach and quickly got a measured understanding of what was happening. It was then simply a matter of reorganising to make a better show of ourselves and in less than half a raid, the job was done.

You remember how it used to be, right? Before ZAT, back in the dim and distant times of TBC. You read up on a boss in advance, knew all the tips and had twenty five players to worry about (and that was so much less epic than our beloved initial 40) and it took weeks for a team to succeed at some encounters. We’re lucky if a new boss lasts an hour right now. From “sight unseen” to “I see what you mean!”

Our team moved passed the fallen ‘major’ and on to Ragnaros himself. The time remaining permitted enough attempts to reach phase two and our next visit has high expectations of succeeding in killing this final obstacle at this tier. Watch this space – if you’re really really bored!

First Kill of Baleroc (10n)!

FBK - Firelands - Baleroc - 10n - 10n

FBK - Firelands - Baleroc - 10n

The evening’s final success occurred as the team presented itself before Baleroc for the first time. After one or two rather promising initial attempts, our mostly ZAT approach (we’re sure a couple of the guys peeked – naughty naughty – we know who you are!) yet another FBK was earned in the very loosest sense of the word. “Because, you know, we showed up, right?!”

The guarded explanation is that Cataclysm’s final major raid content is imminently being readied for release and this content difficulty nerf is merely a means to ensure the majority of the player-base can see and overcome it before new content renders it irrelevant.

The reality is, three of the bosses that were killed with ease tonight had “no right to be so easy” and as a result, fell without offering any sense of achievement or accomplishment. This is one area that Blizzard does not excel at. Applaud them we should for helping all players see all content – but the manner in which they do so is clumsy and awkward.

One wonders if WoW’s design team saw Dara O’Briain’s comments on why games are the most demanding form of popular entertainment right now and decided to do something about it. O’Briain postulated that ‘books don’t ask you what the major themes are at the end of chapter three and require the correct answers before allowing you to read chapter four!’

The Firelands raid-zone has not been an inspiring success so far. Few of the team admire the design or the environment and were it not the required stepping stone for gear and progression, it would see a lot less attention than it does.

In fact, so much of Cataclysm’s raiding content has been a rehash of times past, that the very act both irritates now and spoils the memory of what was done before. Seeing Blizzard ressurrect Onyxia “just one more time” is getting to be about as cliched as seeing Star Trek or Doctor Who (to name but two sci-fi totems) face off against some new realisation of Nazi Germany.

The reappearance of so many old foes might well lend a curious NPC to suggest that our past claims to vanquishing glory were somewhat dishonest. It cannot be denied that there’s been rather too many encounters against the former occupants of Molten Core and the Lairs Blackwing and Onyxia both.

Certainly we’re all anticipating the showdown with Deathwing come the final chapter of this installment of WoW’s story but on current form, Blizzard have a some significant improving to do if they’re going to match the quality of their best work from WoW’s past.
